As a refresher from last week’s article, this year for New Year’s Six games, the Big Ten has an opportunity to send a team to Miami for the Orange Bowl in addition to its traditional spot in the Rose Bowl. The Orange Bowl, in years that it isn’t a national semifinal game, pairs the ACC champion with the highest ranked team from the Big Ten, SEC, or Notre Dame (after the playoffs and Rose and Sugar Bowls make their picks).

After Week 1, I had Notre Dame penciled into the Orange Bowl. They didn’t have too difficult of a schedule after that week one matchup with Ohio State, with a road trip to USC, a neutral site matchup with BYU, and a home showdown against Clemson as their most notable games. If they could have managed to get through that with just one more loss, alongside a respectable showing against the Buckeyes, they seemed to be a lock for the Orange Bowl.

Week 2 put that assumption on its head, though. Notre Dame lost at home to Marshall in embarrassing fashion. While it wouldn’t be impossible for them to recover and get back into play for the Orange Bowl, that might well require them to go undefeated for the rest of the season, a prospect that’s hard to envision given Saturday’s outcome.
